The Orangery

Edmonton, Alberta - Ongoing (Concept Study)

Tucked in behind a downtown Edmonton heritage block, The Orangery breathes life into the historic property, replacing a dilapidated exit stair and activating the building by making use of the underutilized laneway frontage.

The intervention is a transitional space between the existing building and the outdoors. It serves as a shared amenity for the upper-level users and retail spaces at grade. The Orangery acts as both a staircase and a four-season room bringing together building users and the community to meet, eat, and gather. The intervention’s translucent, operable skin invites people in and projects a warm glow through the winter season.
